Maruti Baleno: A Hatchback Tailored for India

Join Us

The Maruti Baleno is a popular hatchback in India, known for its fuel efficiency, spacious interiors, and feature-rich cabin. Launched in 2015, it has consistently ranked among the best-selling cars in the country. Let’s delve deeper into what makes the Baleno a compelling choice for Indian car buyers.

Engine and Performance

The Baleno comes with a single engine option – a 1.2-liter K-Series Dual Jet Dual VVT petrol engine. This engine is known for its refinement and delivers power outputs of 88 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). While the manual transmission offers better control and driving engagement, the AMT provides a convenient automatic driving experience.

The Baleno is known for its fuel efficiency, with a claimed mileage of 22.35 kmpl to 22.94 kmpl for the petrol variants. Maruti Suzuki also introduced a CNG variant in 2022, which offers an impressive mileage of 30.61 km/kg, making it a great choice for those seeking economical running costs.

Variants and Features

The Baleno is available in four main variants: Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha. The base Sigma variant offers essential features like air conditioning, power windows, and a touchscreen infotainment system. As you move up the variants, you get additional features like automatic climate control, cruise control, a sunroof (except in the latest update), a 360-degree parking camera, and connected car technology.

Safety

The Baleno offers a range of safety features, including dual airbags on the base variant and six airbags (front, side, and curtain) on the higher variants. It also comes with ABS with EBD, seatbelt reminders, and a high-speed alert system. However, the Baleno has not been crash tested by Global NCAP, which is a point to consider.

Space and Comfort

The Baleno offers spacious interiors for a hatchback, with ample legroom and headroom for both front and rear passengers. The boot space is a decent 318 liters for the petrol variants, but reduces to 55 liters in the CNG models due to the CNG tank placement. The cabin design is modern and comfortable, with Maruti Suzuki using quality materials and offering a good fit and finish.

Price and Competition

The Maruti Baleno’s price range starts from ₹ 6.66 Lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base variant and goes up to ₹ 9.88 Lakh for the top-end automatic variant. This competitive pricing makes it an attractive option in the hatchback segment. The Baleno’s primary competitors include the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, and Tata Punch.
